Walnut trees are planted in many areas in China while that in Shexian County, Handan City enjoys the longest history. In 2005, Shexian walnut was included in the National Geographic Indication Products List, which is relatively early compared with other breeds.
Shexian, located on the southwest end of Hebei Province，eastern foot of Taihang Mountain, and at the junction of Hebei, Shanxi and Henan Provinces, features agricultural products because of its natural environment and pleasant climate. The cultivation history of walnut is as long as 2000 years, whose high output and quality make it one of the“three treasures of Shexian County”.
There are many varieties of walnuts, but the thin -skinned ones from Shimen and Wencai are the best because they have plump kernel and the oil content rate can reach 60%. The walnut meat contains rich protein, fat, calcium, phosphorus, iron, potassium, carotene and Vitamin A, B and C. Its economic values are shown in that it can be used to make cakes and candy and extract oil. According toCompendium of Materia Medica, walnut meat is mild, so it can tonify blood, moistening dryness and resolving phlegm.
